LVT Flooring Nottingham

Luxury vinyl tile is a multi-layer vinyl floor covering made in individual planks or tiles rather than rolls. A photographic design layer sits under a clear protective wear layer, usually with texture embossed into the surface so it feels like the material it's imitating rather than just looking like it.

LVT versus sheet vinyl: same base material, different format. Sheet vinyl comes in rolls and is seamless, which makes it the more watertight of the two and generally cheaper. LVT comes in pieces, which means it can be laid in patterns, mixed for borders, and individual damaged pieces can be replaced without lifting the whole floor.

LVT versus laminate: this is the one that matters. Laminate has a fibreboard core that swells irreversibly if water gets into it. LVT has no wood in it at all, so standing water does nothing to it. LVT is also warmer and quieter underfoot. Laminate is usually cheaper and, in the better grades, has a slightly crisper wood grain. For kitchens, bathrooms and utility rooms, LVT wins on every measure that matters.

If you only take one technical detail away from this page, make it this one. The wear layer is the clear protective coating over the design, and it's the single biggest factor in how long an LVT floor lasts. It's also the number that separates products which look identical in a brochure.

It's measured in millimetres or mils. As a rough guide, 0.3mm is a typical domestic wear layer, suitable for a normal household. 0.55mm and above is commercial grade, and the premium ranges go higher still. A cheap LVT with a thin wear layer will look identical on day one and noticeably worn in a hallway within a few years.

Where this catches people out is buying online. Two products at very different prices can carry the same photographic design and the same brand family — the difference is entirely in the wear layer. If you're sourcing your own, ask for that figure before you order. We'll tell you honestly whether it suits the room you're putting it in.

Glue-down LVT is bonded directly to the subfloor. It's thinner, sits flatter, handles heavy traffic and heat better, and is the right choice for kitchens, bathrooms and anywhere with underfloor heating. It's also the only sensible option where the pattern involves borders or feature laying. The trade-off is that the subfloor has to be genuinely flat and the floor takes longer to fit.

Click-fit LVT locks together as a floating floor, like laminate. It's quicker to install, more forgiving of a slightly imperfect subfloor, and can be lifted and reused. But the joints are a weak point in wet areas, and it can telegraph movement in a way glue-down doesn't.

For most Nottingham homes we'd specify glue-down in kitchens, bathrooms and hallways, and click-fit is a reasonable choice for bedrooms and living rooms on a tighter budget.

Amtico is British-made and sits at the premium end of the LVT market. The range splits into several collections: Signature is the flagship with the thickest wear layers and the widest design choice, Spacia is the more affordable core range, Form focuses on realistic wood reproduction, and Click Smart is the click-fit option for floating installation.

What you're paying for with Amtico is design quality and durability. The embossing genuinely follows the grain rather than being a generic texture pressed over the top, which is what makes the wood ranges convincing close up. The stone and décor ranges also allow proper feature laying — borders, strips and pattern work that cheaper LVT can't carry off.

It's a sensible choice for a hallway, kitchen or open-plan space that's going to take real traffic and that you want to still look right in fifteen years.

Polyflor comes out of a commercial flooring background, and it shows in the durability. Two ranges come up most often. Camaro covers wood and stone effects and is a genuine workhorse — it's specified in schools, healthcare and retail as often as in homes, which tells you what it'll stand up to in a family hallway. Colonia is the more design-led range, including the herringbone formats that have become so popular.

Polyflor generally sits below Amtico on price without a meaningful drop in durability, which makes it our most common recommendation where someone wants a floor that will last but doesn't need the very top of the design range. It's also fully waterproof, so it's a strong option for bathrooms and wet areas.

TLC produce both residential and contract LVT, with the Messimo range being the one we fit most in homes — warm oak tones that suit living rooms and open-plan spaces particularly well. Their commercial grades are built for heavy footfall and turn up in offices, cafés and retail units.

In practical terms TLC delivers much the same benefits as Amtico at a slightly lower price point, so the choice between them usually comes down to whether a specific design appeals rather than any real difference in performance. Worth being straight about budget. If you're searching for cheap luxury vinyl tiles, what we'd offer is better described as cheaper rather than cheap — good-quality LVT at a lower price point rather than the bottom of the market.

The reason is the wear layer. Genuinely cheap LVT achieves its price by thinning the protective layer, and in a hallway or kitchen that shows within a couple of years. You end up paying twice. A mid-range product with a decent wear layer, properly fitted onto a properly prepared subfloor, will outlast two cheap floors and cost less overall.

Where we can genuinely save you money is on fit-only, if you've sourced your own flooring, and on doing several rooms at once — most of the cost of a small job is getting set up, so adding rooms is proportionally cheaper than doing them separately.

LVT is the least forgiving floor we lay. Because the material is thin and flexible, it takes the shape of whatever is underneath it — every ripple, trowel mark, dip and screw head telegraphs through to the finished surface, and it's far more visible on a wide expanse of stone-effect LVT than it would be under a textured carpet.

In practice that means floor preparation is genuinely part of the job rather than an optional extra. On suspended timber floors, common in Nottingham's Victorian and interwar housing, that usually means overboarding to create a flat, stable base. On concrete slabs it more often means a levelling compound or screed.

We assess the subfloor before quoting and price the preparation in from the start. A quote that doesn't mention it either hasn't looked, or is planning to raise it once the work has begun.

We fit LVT throughout Nottingham and Nottinghamshire, on a supply-and-fit basis or fit-only if you've already bought your flooring. The standard of work is identical either way.

If you're buying your own, two things are worth knowing. Order generously — perimeter cutting generates more waste than people expect, and herringbone or pattern laying more again. Topping up later usually means a different batch with a slightly different tone. And check the wear layer, as covered above, because it's the specification that actually determines how long the floor lasts.

It's also worth mentioning if you're having other flooring done at the same time. Most of the cost of any job is mobilising for it, so adding LVT to a visit where we're already fitting carpet elsewhere in the house is considerably cheaper than a separate trip.
